Shoes off at the door or keep them on inside?

I never know what to do when visiting someone's house. The ambiguity is worse than either choice honestly.

The real question is why is this even debated. Shoes off is just basic respect and hygiene.

Depends on the flooring and how long I'm staying. Quick kitchen run? Shoes on. Settling in for hours? Off they come.

Shoes off, obviously. Cold feet on hardwood doesn't feel great but that's what socks are for.

Keep them on. I'm in and out constantly — it's impractical to take them off and put them back on a dozen times.

Shoes off always. My carpet stays clean, my floors stay protected, and guests respect that boundary. It's not complicated.
