Old age: the state pays, or the family pays?

If the state does it, you lose control over your parent's care. Family knows what they need better than some government office ever will.

Strong family bonds and collective care aren't mutually exclusive. Most cultures that work best have both.

Ideally both? But realistically, if you wait for the family to do it, millions of elderly people get abandoned.

This is exactly what taxes should pay for. Healthcare, pensions, care homes — that's the whole point of society. Not everyone can afford to be a full-time caregiver.

Family should step up. The state already takes enough in taxes — we don't need to become completely dependent on bureaucrats for our own parents.
