Dinner out with friends: split it equally or pay what you ordered?

I think equal split only works if you all agreed beforehand. Otherwise you're just guessing what people are comfortable with.

The problem with equal split: one person always orders wine and appetizers while everyone else gets water and an entrée. Then it's suddenly 'just split it' and you're subsidizing their choices.

Equal split is a friendship tax honestly

Splitting equally works great when everyone orders similar stuff, but it gets awkward fast when there's a big difference. Pay your own is just cleaner.

If someone orders a $40 steak and I get a $15 salad, why should I pay the same? That's just not fair.
